Building Energy Certification Platform

How we studied a specialist engineering workflow and translated it into a reliable, maintainable platform for energy auditors.

Government-compliant building energy certificate generated from project data

Automatically generated building energy certificate from structured project data.

Challenge

From fragmented spreadsheets to a structured engineering workflow.

A certified energy auditor relied on interconnected Excel workbooks, Word templates, government-issued forms, and legacy desktop software to complete building energy assessments.

Each project required hundreds of measurements, technical inputs, material properties, system parameters, and engineering calculations before a final certificate could be produced.

The process worked, but it was manual, repetitive, difficult to maintain, and vulnerable to inconsistencies whenever data had to be copied between spreadsheets and documents.

Before designing the platform, we had to understand how the auditor actually worked: where data entered the process, how the calculations related to one another, which outputs were mandatory, and where professional judgment still mattered.

Before

Manual spreadsheet workflow

  • Interconnected Excel files with hidden formulas
  • Manual copying into Word and certificate templates
  • Legacy desktop software used for regulatory output
  • Repeated data entry across multiple documents
  • Calculation changes hard to verify and maintain

After

Centralized certification platform

  • Structured project database for each building
  • Application-level engineering calculations
  • Reusable workflows for building systems and measures
  • Automated export and document preparation
  • Configurable parameters for future updates

Solution

We learned the auditing process, then modeled it as software.

Rather than simply recreating spreadsheets in a browser, the platform captures the full certification lifecycle as a structured workflow.

Legacy process

Years of domain expertise were trapped inside spreadsheets.

The original workflow contained deeply specialized engineering calculations, regulatory assumptions, reusable templates, and auditor-specific methodology. The project required understanding that knowledge before translating it into software.

Platform

A web platform for large, technical engineering datasets.

The application organizes hundreds of parameters into clear sections, allowing auditors to manage normalized and actual building states, evaluate energy-saving measures, and export structured results.

Scope

The platform captured the structure of real buildings.

Engineering

Turning expert methodology into maintainable software.

Research before implementation

The work began with the existing process: tracing how data moved across surveys, spreadsheets, calculations, templates, and regulatory outputs. That understanding shaped the product model and the implementation.

Engineering knowledge translated into software

Existing calculations were distributed across Excel formulas, engineering standards, and regulatory documents. We transformed that domain knowledge into maintainable application logic while preserving calculation accuracy.

Complex domain modeling

The platform models buildings as interconnected systems instead of disconnected spreadsheets, helping auditors maintain consistency across measurements, materials, systems, and energy-saving measures.

Structured workflow for large datasets

Energy audits require hundreds of inputs. We organized them into clear sections so auditors could navigate complex building data without losing context.

Document automation

Project data can be reused across the reporting workflow to populate standardized documents and certificates required by the relevant authorities.

Product

Secure access for managing multiple certification projects.

The application introduced standard product capabilities including authentication, project storage, editable datasets, exports, and administrator-managed calculation parameters.
